Triển lãm “9 người tháng 5” đang diễn ra tại Con Art Station, tháp Hawaii, đảo Kim Cương, đến hết 14/6/2026.
Bày tranh của Bùi Tiến Tuấn, Dương Thụy, Huỳnh Lê Nhật Tấn, Bùi Chát, Phan Trọng Văn, Trần Ngọc Linh, Trần Việt Đức, ng.anh anh và Jordy Viet Phuong Givre.
Từ cái nhìn của một giám tuyển tài tử, thấy triển lãm này (không giám tuyển) có hai điều rất thú vị, mà bản thân rất muốn chạm đến.
Đầu tiên là sự ráp nối khá ngon lành của 9 con người có xuất thân, thâm niên và địa vị mỹ thuật khác nhau.
Trường quy mỹ thuật có Bùi Tiến Tuấn, Phan Trọng Văn, Trần Ngọc Linh.
Chuyển đổi mục đích vẽ có Dương Thụy, Huỳnh Lê Nhật Tấn.
Tự đào tạo có Bùi Chát.
Tự học có ng.anh anh, Trần Việt Đức, Jordy Viet Phuong Givre.
Nếu từng tiếp xúc với 9 người này, sẽ thấy 9 tính nết khác nhau.
Ôn hòa có, bốc đồng có, thanh lịch có… Ráp được họ với nhau trong một triển lãm vừa vặn, có khúc thức về câu chuyện, có sự nhịp nhàng về thị giác, quả là tài tình.
Điểm thú vị thứ hai là sự xuất hiện của Trần Việt Đức và Jordy Viet Phuong Givre.
Cả hai mới hứng lên vẽ chừng 7 tháng như Jordy và chừng 1 năm như Trần Việt Đức. Nhưng thực sự thì tranh họ đã có tín hiệu để xem, dù chưa thật đậm nét.
Ở tuổi ngoại lục tuần, Trần Việt Đức là một nhiếp ảnh gia thành danh, có triển lãm ảnh cá nhân đầu tiên từ khoảng năm 1994, chuyên chụp nhân vật đời thường và phóng sự mưu sinh.
Ảnh của anh từng được sử dụng nhiều trên New York Times, Bangkok Post, Times Magazine, Asia Week, South China Morning Post… Anh được mời chụp ảnh Tổng thống Bill Clinton, trong chuyến thăm đánh dấu bình thường hóa quan hệ Mỹ – Việt Nam.
Thế nhưng với tranh, anh hoàn toàn là một tân binh. Tranh anh có sự tươi vui, thoải mái, khác hẳn với những bức ảnh giàu tương phản, nhiều suy tư mà anh đã/đang chụp.
Jordy Viet Phuong Givre từ Pháp đến Việt Nam chừng 1 năm nay, vừa để tìm việc theo chuyên môn, vừa để tìm lại phần chất Việt trong bản thân, cũng như luyện nói tiếng Việt.
Jordy tiếp xúc Bùi Chát, Dương Thụy, Huỳnh Lê Nhật Tấn và vài người khác để cùng bạn gái làm phim tài liệu về việc vẽ. Rồi một đêm cách đây chừng 7 tháng, Jordy bắt đầu vẽ, đến nay đã có hàng trăm bức, khá nhiều bức không ưng ý thì bị vẽ đè lên để rèn luyện và để tiết kiệm.
Qua tranh, ta thấy vẻ ngoài thư sinh của Jordy chẳng ăn nhập gì với một nội tâm sâu thẳm và mạnh mẽ, để bày ra những bố cục, những bảng màu nhiều ẩn ức, dằn vặt.
Nói gọn lại, cả Trần Việt Đức và Jordy Viet Phuong Givre chỉ vẽ một thời gian nữa thôi là đủ sức làm triển lãm cá nhân ngon lành. Lúc ấy sẽ viết nhiều hơn. Còn bây giờ thì lên bia cho hai tân binh đầy hứa hẹn này.

The exhibition 9 People of May is currently on view at CON Art Station, Hawaii Tower, Diamond Island, and runs through June 14, 2026.
The exhibition features works by Bui Tien Tuan, Duong Thuy, Huynh Le Nhat Tan, Bui Chat, Phan Trong Van, Tran Ngoc Linh, Tran Viet Duc, ng.anh anh, and Jordy Viet Phuong Givre.
From the perspective of an amateur curator, I find two particularly interesting aspects in this exhibition—an exhibition without a curator—that I would like to touch upon.
The first is the remarkably successful gathering of nine individuals with very different backgrounds, levels of experience, and positions within the art world.
Formally trained artists include Bui Tien Tuan, Phan Trong Van, and Tran Ngoc Linh.
Artists who came to painting through a shift in purpose include Duong Thuy and Huynh Le Nhat Tan.
Self-trained is Bui Chat.
Self-taught are ng.anh anh, Tran Viet Duc, and Jordy Viet Phuong Givre.
Anyone who has spent time with these nine people would recognize nine distinct personalities.
Some are gentle, some impulsive, some refined. To bring them together in a single exhibition that feels balanced, with a certain narrative rhythm and visual harmony, is no small achievement.
The second interesting point is the presence of Tran Viet Duc and Jordy Viet Phuong Givre.
Both are newcomers to painting—Jordy has been painting for only about seven months, and Tran Viet Duc for roughly a year. Yet their works already show promising signs, even if their artistic voices are not fully formed.
Now in his sixties, Tran Viet Duc is an accomplished photographer whose first solo photography exhibition dates back to around 1994. He is known for documenting everyday people and stories of livelihood.
His photographs have appeared in publications such as The New York Times, Bangkok Post, Time Magazine, Asiaweek, and South China Morning Post. He was also invited to photograph President Bill Clinton during the historic visit that marked the normalization of relations between the United States and Vietnam.
In painting, however, he is a complete beginner. His paintings possess a sense of freshness and ease, markedly different from the highly contrasted and contemplative photographs he has made throughout his career.
Jordy Viet Phuong Givre arrived in Vietnam about a year ago, partly to pursue professional opportunities, partly to reconnect with his Vietnamese roots, and also to improve his Vietnamese language skills.
Through his encounters with Bui Chat, Duong Thuy, Huynh Le Nhat Tan, and several others, Jordy and his partner began making a documentary film about painting. Then, one evening about seven months ago, he started painting himself. Since then, he has produced hundreds of works. Many of those he was dissatisfied with were painted over—both as practice and as a way to save materials.
Looking at his paintings, one quickly realizes that Jordy’s scholarly appearance bears little resemblance to the depth and intensity of his inner world. His compositions and color palettes reveal layers of tension, repression, and emotional struggle.
In short, both Tran Viet Duc and Jordy Viet Phuong Givre only need a little more time before they are fully capable of mounting compelling solo exhibitions of their own.
When that time comes, there will be much more to write about them.
For now, let us raise a glass to these two promising newcomers.
